This event was a demonstration of these traditions.<\/p>\n<p>In the old castle town of Matsumoto, there was an area called Takajomachi(\u9df9\u5320\u753a) named after the falconers, or &#8220;Takajo&#8221; in Japanese, that lived there. There was also another area called Esashimachi(\u990c\u5dee\u753a) where the small birds that were used to feed the falcons were raised (in Japanese, &#8220;e&#8221; means feed or bait and here &#8220;sashi&#8221; refers to the person giving the food). <\/p>\n<p>The falconry show was performed by the Suwa Falconry Preservation Society (see Japanese website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.falconers-hermitage.com\/hozonkai.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). Apparently members of this society go through a tiered qualification process in order to become falconers! The three types of birds of prey trained by falconers are the Harris Hawk, Norther Goshawk, and the Japanese Buzzard. <\/p>\n<p>The show started off by the falconers walking the falcons slowly around the performance area, so the birds could adjust to their surroundings.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/visitmatsumoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0701-640x440.jpg?resize=540%2C370&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSC_0701-640x440\" width=\"540\" height=\"370\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17353\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, the falcons flew between two people and then returned. They flew quite low!
