This custom originates from a religious ritual that dates back hundreds of years in which people cleaned their houses to welcome in the god of the New Year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17812\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitmatsumoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSCF4935-590x393.jpg?resize=590%2C393&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The susuharai team posing with their brooms in front of Taikomon Gate\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17812\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The susuharai team posing with their brooms in front of Taikomon Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Starting in the morning, several workers dressed in bright orange coveralls take 4-meter long (12 feet!) bamboo broom in hand and sweep off the walls of the Taikomon Gate, Kuromon Gate, and the lower part of the castle tower. At some points, they even climb partially up the stone foundation of the tower in order to reach a few more meters up (I couldn&#8217;t get photos of this but you can see a couple photos on the Matsumoto Castle website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matsumoto-castle.jp\/lang\/eng\/event\/winter\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> by scrolling down to the Susuharai event).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17817\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17817\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/visitmatsumoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSCF4943crop-590x380.jpg?resize=590%2C380&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The super long susuharai brooms\" width=\"590\" height=\"380\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17817\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The super long susuharai brooms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are also other workers who actually go out on the castle&#8217;s roof and wipe the roof tiles. The <em>shimenawa<\/em> represents the barrier between our world and the world of the gods, and the rope prevents any evil from entering. These are same kind of ropes that you&#8217;ll find year-round at Shinto shrines, but around New Year&#8217;s shimenawa are also hung up at homes and businesses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17814\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/visitmatsumoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSCF4939-590x393.jpg?resize=590%2C393&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The shimenawa across the castle tower entrance\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17814\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The shimenawa across the castle tower entrance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The shimenawa hung up at Matsumoto Castle are huge\u2014several meters in length and I imagine quite heavy.
